Raising Children with Confidence (RCWC) is a universal training course for parents and carers. It has been run extensively in Edinburgh and has been extremely well evaluated. It is now being rolled out across Scotland through the Growing Confidence Development Programme (GCDP), which trains facilitators to deliver the course to parents and carers in their local area.

The aims of RCWC are:

  • Improve parent and carer understanding about factors which influence positive mental health and emotional well-being.
  • Support parents and carers to better promote emotional well-being in themselves and their children.

It draws on current research and findings in neuroscience, psychology and social science to explain what influences children’s emotional well-being. The key messages of the course highlight the importance of positive relationships and interactions in shaping children's emotional and social skills. Not prescriptive, rather it recognises the uniqueness of every family and increases the knowledge and reflective capacity of parents and carers to enable them to make choices and changes which are relevant to their circumstances.

Delivery of the course can support school and community settings to work in partnership with parents/carers.
